Thats the way the world works...buy something and sell it on for a higher price.

They have taken the time to register the domain name and own it so they can really do what they like with it.

It depends what you expect your traffic to be.

A virtual server is individual server space on a shared box, but it appears like it's your own server. There could be hundreds of websites hosted on that server.

A dedicated server is a single box for you.

It is required, for .coms and some others, it is possible to get domain privacy which means it will look like the registrar owns the domain and they will forward any attempts from anyone who wants to communicate to you without giving away your identity.

Other companies may have slimmer profit margins, trying to break into the business, have better business model, etc.

You really have to look into which services a registrar offers and how important they are to you.

My experience, however, is that the price of registration does not generally determine which features you get. You may get many features included with cheaper guys, while "brand names" will charge extra for them. For example, landing pages, email forwarding, etc.

I use Microsoft Office Live for my .com site (last time I posted a link I got reported for "Solicitation")
Formerly free (the very last free provider) they began charging as of October 2009 and their charge seems very reasonable.
Not sure what you mean by offensive marketing but GoDaddy is one of the major players and presumably pays out thousands of dollars to keep its service going. This money has to come from somewhere. If all ads were eliminated, most likely the cost to customers would have to rise.
Free service = site littered with ads (to raise money to maintain the service)
Cheap service = a few ads
(Seemingly) costly service = no ads
Microsoft Office Live advertise only themselves and the ads are not at all intrusive

Go into www.whois.com, i think this is the best site for directly registering a domain. you can also check for the availability of the domain name you are looking for.

There isnt a .com Registration. You have to deal with someone who is able to provide you with a domain.

If one fails you have to move it to another buisness.

Or host the domain yourself
